The Olmec people, renowned for their colossal stone heads, were also exceptional engineers and agricultural innovators. Living in a region characterized by swamps and wetlands, they developed a remarkable solution to cultivate crops: raised fields.

These artificial islands were constructed by piling up soil and vegetation on top of shallow lake beds or swampy areas. The raised platforms created a stable and fertile environment for crops, protected from flooding and providing optimal growing conditions.

Construction: To build these fields, the Olmec would weave branches and stakes into a framework. This structure was then covered with mud and silt to create the raised platform.
