In the Avatar short story Zuko and Sokka face off in a swordbending kai with Zuko proving his superior swordbending abilities, causing Sokka to fall and hit the ground
Zuko smiles and Aang declares the winner while Sokka instantly demands a rematch
The rematch goes as well as expected as we see Sokka lose to zuko over and over again until Katara can no longer even watch
Zuko taunts Sokka, telling him to give up but he is still confident claiming three minutes is all he will need to beat Zuko
So he charges at Zuko who disarms Sokka easily and he looks hopeless until he thinks of an interesting backup plan
Sokka pulls out his trusty boomerang and flings it at Zuko who dodges and says there are no boomerangs in swordbending
Zuko then realizes he said swordbending which he previously claimed was not a real word, and that second is all it takes for the boomerang to circle back and clock him right in the back of the head
Aang says Sokka did cheat but Sokka claims he may have lost the battle of swords but is happy to have won the battle of words as this short story concludes

The world is divided into four nations -- the Water Tribe, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads -- each represented by a natural element for which the nation is named. Benders have the ability to control and manipulate the element from their nation. Only the Avatar is the master of all four elements. The ruthless Fire Nation wants to conquer the world but the only bender who has enough power, the Avatar, has disappeared ... until now. His tribe soon discovers that Aang is the long-lost Avatar. Now Katara and Sokka must safeguard Aang on his journey to master all four elements and save the world from the Fire Nation.

Zuko can hold his own against Jet, a squad of Earth bending soldiers, an entire squadron of fire nation soldiers. Zuko is goated. Sokka was never willing this one

Sokka have the right foundations to be a great swordsman
Don't forget that sokka has been practicing swords alone (after leaving master Piandao while Zuko had been training from probably the age of 6 (probably also with Piandao for several years)
