Medigap is another name for Medicare Supplement insurance. These plans are offered by private insurance companies, and they fill in the "gaps" that your Original Medicare benefits don't pay. In other words, Medigap pays the Medicare coinsurance, co-pays and deductibles that you are responsible for, so you don't have to pay them.
Medigap Plans offer you the freedom to choose you own doctors, and there are no plan networks. These plans also travel with you, so you have coverage nationwide (and many Medigap Plans also include foreign travel medical benefits too).
In many parts of the country, Medigap Plan G pricing starts at around $80-$130/month for a 65 year old, depending on the Plan and your area.
The best time to enroll in Medigap is when you are newly eligible for Medicare Part B - after that, you could be subject to medical underwriting, and potentially denied coverage based on your health.

Where do you find where you can compare prices of Medigap between different companies?

Is there a one year trial period whereby a person turning 65 can sign up for an Advantage plan but then switch to a Supplement plan? I was told there is a one year period after signing up for the first time to be able to switch without underwriting.

Thanks Stephanie for all of your very useful videos and information. I have a plan N, and at age 72 have been extremely fortunate to have very minimal medical care needs to date. That said, I am having difficulty getting an appointment with a specialist (urology), and the offices in question (plus my F.P.) will not accept me without a referral. Everything I've read from CMS information on down indicates I shouldn't need a referral, and that is one of the many things that made me choose a Medigap plan. Your thoughts? Thanks again for your informative videos.

I've been trying soooo hard, with a broker, w/SSDI, Medicare A and B, with the buy in, paid fully with MA Health-, my medicaid, full, my secondary insurance. I get all benefits. I'm moving and I'm only eligible for medicaid, for Medicare B premium paid and I believe, as told today, qualify for Prescription drugs extra help. I'm so confused about the terms, as I'm on SSDI & was told not to get Medigap, bc of the premium. To get an an advantage plan. This is moving from MA to NC. I'm terrified 😨.

Stephanie I’m 68 and just started the process to enroll in Medicare A & B. On February 18 I will be on phone for my claim. Not sure what to expect! How will I be penalized for enrolling so late ? How soon should I cancel my covered ca as I know you can’t have both Covered Ca and Medicare at same time! Thanks Drew

My mom qualified for disability and Medicaid when she was 55. It looks like she was enrolled in Medicare advantage. Wondering if she would be able to potentially sign up for medigap when she turns 65 if by any chance she doesn’t qualify for medicaid at that time.

Medical underwriting is a health insurance term referring to the use of medical or health information in the evaluation of an applicant for coverage, typically for life or health insurance.

As part of the underwriting process, an individual's health information may be used in making two decisions: whether to offer or deny coverage and what premium rate to set for the policy.

The two most common methods of medical underwriting are known as moratorium underwriting, a relatively simple process, and full medical underwriting, a more indepth analysis of a client's health information.

The use of medical underwriting may be restricted by law in certain insurance markets.

If allowed, the criteria used should be objective, clearly related to the likely cost of providing coverage, practical to administer, consistent with applicable law, and designed to protect the long-term viability of the insurance system.

It is the process in which an underwriter considers the health conditions of the person who is applying for the insurance, keeping in mind certain factors like health condition, age, nature of work, and geographical zone.

After looking at all the factors, an underwriter suggests whether a policy should be given to the person and at what price, or premium.
