Raheem Sterling’s ‘emotions ran over’ in clash with Joe Gomez, says Gareth Southgate

Raheem Sterling’s “emotions ran over” in clash with England teammate Joe Gomez, according to manager Gareth Southgate.

Manchester City forward Sterling has been dropped for England’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Montenegro due to the incident.

Sterling and Gomez clashed towards the end of Liverpool's 3-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday and emotions boiled over after the pair joined up with the England squad the following day.

Southgate said: “I think I’m dealing with a very young squad, very young squad. And we’re in a sport where emotions often run high. I think Raheem, in his post last night, explained that for a very brief moment his emotions ran over and it would be correct to say that’s not the same for Joe.”
