GREAT 3 pickups Wiring - To get the most BANG for your BUCK.

Download the Wiring Diagram right here:

In this video I'm answering the question: How to wire a guitar with 3 pickups. I’m wiring my 3 pickup guitar with two 3-way toggle switches to get 7 pickup combinations, and it works amazingly. In the end of the video you can hear each of the 7 combinations clean and with effects.

I build this guitar for The Great Guitar Build Off 2021 and you can follow the build on this playlist:

I’m heavily inspired by Novo guitars by Dennis Fano - and my building philosophy is - not to reinvent the wheel- but rather try to learn from the greats.

I’m a guitar building beginner and I have been following The Great Guitar Build Off competition 2020. I learned a lot from the competitors and that inspired me greatly to build a guitar myself.

I built my first guitar under lockdown last summer 2020 and guitar building kind of hooked me.

You can watch first guitar build right here:

Why is that a good thing? Because old wood is cool ... and also more resonant.

The point is to learn how to build great guitars. It can't be rocket science, but it's fascinating. My plan is to learn from the best by researching materials, components, and methods.

In this video I cover:

00:00 - Intro
00:18 - Why build your own guitar?
00:30 - How to wire 3 pickups for maximum tone possibilities
00:53 - The parts you need to wire a guitar
01:10 - How to wire the pots and the capacitor
03:06 - How to connect the pickups and toggle switches
04:16 - Connecting the toggle switches to the pots
04:35 - Assembling the guitar for test
04:44 - A satisfying moment ;)

Everything was terrific! All of the combinations sound real good. My favorite song was no. 7 you should do a short video jamming over that.

I’m glad I found this. I’m a bit of a tinkerer and I have a Chinese LP that I’d like to run 3 pickups in, just for the fun of it and I think they look pretty cool like that. I was planning on doing it slightly different, I was going to use 3 x 3 way switches, and running one to each pickup, and wiring them as off/split/humbucker.

Great demo! very musical. Do you use Tv Jones bridge or neck? Wondering how high you needed to adjust it to the strings to achieve the balance with other pickups?

I've been watching for a little while now, but I hadn't commented yet. I like your series, and I expect I'll be looking and perhaps commenting more.

As someone who prefers a very uncommon (even rare, or so it seems) neck depth and shape, I can agree that a custom build is a fine way to go. I've found my main love in a guitar is a Mosrite, since the often slim neck sizes work very well for me. Also (still in Mosrite territory) I have grown to like the German Carve on my 1966 Ventures II "Carved" model, which gives a comfortable place to rest my arm. Telecasters don't have that, and I'd like a Telecaster, but a bit more Mosrite-like with a carve.

In a similar vein to your video title, I once thought a person could make multiple coil taps for in a guitar. Say, put one exit at 7k ohms and then another at 10k and a final one at 12k. This is all perfectly doable, if you use a Stratocaster 3-Way Switch in this way. Not a Telecaster or Les Paul style switch (they're open to 2 selections in the middle, ) but a 3 Way Strat Switch that is meant to go to 1 selection at a time.

I like where you put the toggle switch on your guitar. Then again, see my profile pic of a 1960s Mosrite Ventures Mark V (not my exact guitar, though I have an earlier Ventures II like it:) that's just the most ideal place where it's easily accessible while playing, while still being well enough out of the way that you can avoid hitting it.

Hello Michael

What you said at the beginning about why build a guitar, I agree with you 1000% and that's exactly why I didn't wanna go for a kit. This path is more difficult but who cares, no matter how much work I have to put into it I will give it my all.

Edit:I've just heard the sound and it is absolutely unbelievable, I mean it!
I've checked out soany different guitars and pickups and this is exactly what I want, gorgeous!

Ps:I'm just absolutely drooling over that Gibson Es in the background

Great video and very instructive but I was wondering how would you do this with a push/pull tone knob instead of a second toggle switch?

I'm interested in knowing if you were to do three humbuckers wire them like ar strat with one volume and 2 tones but due the double sector switch how you would be able to connect it all

I have a similar idea, but I am planning to have 3 on/off switches for each pickup, so I can turn on or off any pickup I want individually, but I don't know how am I supposed to wire that all. It's gonna have 1 master tone and 1 master volume, but idk how to wire 3 toggle switches

Is it possible to do this on a guitar with 3 humbuckers, two volumes and two tones? I could discard a tone pot to put a switch in one of the slots and make with only one master tone, any thoughts?

Thanks for the video. This is something I have been searching for! It's perfect for two of my projects. Could I get the wiring diagram? im unable to download it from the url in the description. Can I also ask - what type of 3 way toggle did you use? Would I need to find one that is specific for 3 pickups? Pardon if you mention that in the video - I haven't watched it all yet - too excited and wanted to fire off the comment.  lol.

Thanks for the good demo, nice tones. What about the concern of putting two pickups too close together, is there a magnetic interferance or loss of tone or similar? Is a single pickup tone affected by the proximity of the other pickup? I want to put a HB size P90 between a HB bridge and a Tele neck, should I be worried about the distance between the pickups or just go for any position that I think would sound best?

If you allow me, your soldering iron doesn't seem powerful enough but you should at least use a larger tip (~2mm). It would be easier/faster to solder on the back of the pots and other ground lugs. Some rosin flux would also be helpful (even if there is some of it in the solder wire).

Apart from that, could you tell me where you successfully bought your witch hat knobs ? I'm looking for this version but Kluson seems to not sell the US model in Europe. I only find the metric one.

PS : Great clean tones .
