The queen of Lausanne's old town is the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which is considered an important Gothic building. The rose window from the early 13th century is particularly important.
The old town of Lausanne surrounds the cathedral with the Castle St-Maire, built between 1397 and 1427, and the town hall from the 17th century. The Ale Tower from 1340 and that of the Bishop's Castle in Ouchy from the 12th century are the last witnesses of the medieval ramparts.
Notre-Dame Cathedral in Lausanne, canton of Vaud, is the main Reformed church in the city as well as the Église Évangélique Réformée du canton de Vaud. Before the Reformation it was the episcopal church of the Diocese of Lausanne. It is considered an important Gothic building in Switzerland and had a significant influence on the further development of Gothic architecture in the region.
The cathedral, dedicated to Mary as Our Lady (French: Notre Dame), is the successor church to the 6th-century church dedicated to Saint Thyrsus, later named Saint-Maire. The Carolingian building was replaced by an early Romanesque church around 1000. A century and a half later, construction began again. Lausanne Cathedral follows the typical scheme of a Gothic basilica: the three-aisled nave is attached to the west front with two towers (only one tower was built).
The rose window in the transept is significant and dates from the early 13th century. Her pictorial program, created by the so-called Master of the Rose of Lausanne, includes nothing less than a depiction of the then known world: earth and sea, air and fire, seasons, months and zodiac signs, as well as monsters that lurk on the edge of the world.
