National anthem of Georgian Democratic Republic - state, which proclaimed independence in 1918. In 1991 Georgian parliament proclaimed not just independence, but restoration of that state, Georgia used flag and anthem of GDR until 2004.

In my (admittedly biased) opinion, this has to be the greatest defucnt anthem of all time. The melody, the text, the performance, _everything_ about it, is so to the core, sincerely *Georgian.* It's so humble and honest, yet soaring a the same time. There is a sense of pride and patriotism to it, but it's all imbued with such grief and sorrow... Which makes total sense, as it was written during the first time of Georgian independence since over a century, in extremely dire and troubling times, where it was unclear if the state would even survive or be consumed by its Ottoman archrival just like what happened to Armenia... It was a spark of hope in a tumultuous and chaotic period, a spark still tainted by sadness and almost desparation. This song makes me really emotional, and I'm REALLY sad it got scrapped in 2004. For shame... Our new anthem is bombastic and a ton of fun to play loudly, but it lacks the nuance and layered complexity, not to mention the historic aspect, that made this one so spectacular. It's a relatively hollow song and seemingly just there to play on ceremonies, not to feel patriotic towards.
