One of the most oft-quoted adages in the social sciences is the notion that “geography is destiny.” Now it is all but obsolete. Due to an unprecedented infrastructural expansion that began in the 20th century and is surging into the 21st century, connectivity has become our destiny. Transportation, energy and communications networks are the new foundation of global order in a world that will increasingly be shaped by urban nodes than nations.
