MOE will protect teachers from 'unreasonable expectations' that affect their well-being

Teachers in Singapore do not need to share their personal phone numbers or answer non-emergency work messages after school hours. The Education Ministry announced this at its Annual Work Plan Seminar today, as part of moves to establish boundaries and protect the well-being of educators. MOE also stressed the importance of mutual courtesy and respect, warning that those who harass or abuse school staff will be firmly dealt with. It's also working to reduce teachers' workload.

This should extend to include unreasonable demands from the school's administration like ambitious principals...

Back in the 70s, before computers & social media, teachers & parents work things out with respect & mutual understanding. What has Singapore come to these days?

Great! This is why the PAP govt is ranked the most effective in the world. Opposition parties certainly have a lot to learn from PAP.❤❤

Teachers duties like patrolling during break time and lunchtimes can be replaced by engaging parents help or employing breaktimes supervisors so teachers have a proper break themselves.

After work means after work. A break is necessary for mental health.

The problem is that teachers these days are basically glorified social workers and nannies. The emphasis on the so-called "duty to care" has meant that core competencies in teaching have become neglected over the years. When teachers have little else to show for their professionalism apart from their abilities to "care for students", no wonder they are getting bogged down by all the nonsensical duties outside of actual teaching.

We should be ashamed that we even need to put in place such policies in a first world country 😢

Unfortunately it happens at office workplaces too!

The teachers these days are overly protected. I still strongly stand by my words when I said teachers from the past is still the best.

The teachers these days got spoon fed so much by MOE and it has became a pillar for them that they ultimately forgotten their main duties to be a responsible and pro active teacher. It ended up throwing all work load to the children parents these days.

Ever since HBL has been introduced, school or teachers has been expecting parents to do the teaching and guidance of their school home works. They failed to realized that parents are physically or even mentally exhausted from a whole day work. Schools these days are throwing and pushing lot of important announcements Parents Gateway and then that’s that. Home work are thrown to SLS.

Too much difference from traditional teachers attitude in terms of teaching and responsibility.

1. Many school leaders have low EQ. And so you need to work on that .
2. Make teaching less about promotions and you will get more sincere teachers.
3. Install air-con for your classes so teachers don't sweat while squeezing in with another 35 kids.
4. Decrease your FAJT workload so more of them will continue to help your full time teachers willingly.
5. Remove all your weighted assessments, to only 1 exam at the end of the year so teachers don't have to stress about completing syllabus every term.
