This could be a major sign that something’s wrong with the NGAD fighter, and if something’s wrong with the NGAD fighter, then the US is in trouble — there’s no other way to put it. This is Bull! Simply put, the only issue is how many will be developed due to program overlaps. Namely, the F/A XX and the B-21. Both are 6th Gen. Aircraft so naturally both have similar capabilities. NGAD will still go into production. Also, although the NGAD is pumped up to be the best fighter the world has ever seen, it is rumored that the Air Force's F/A XX is even deadlier. So there's the real scoop!

The primary issue is money. Not enough to build the aircraft in fleet numbers.

The NGAD family of aircraft has become so technologically advanced that the unmanned version can be had for less cost. Unmanned fighters can be remotely piloted or AI assisted that can perform impressive maneuvers to prosecute enemy targets. Losing these aircraft to enemy fire does not have a psychological effects compared to the loss of a human pilot in a downed manned aircraft.

Furthermore, legacy aircraft like a c130/c17 or b52/B1 or f15/f16 could be configured as a mother ship giving commands to engage enemy aircraft/ground/surface ship targets.

These combat drones can be built in large numbers attacking in swarms that overwhelm enemy defenses.

Stealth fighters have a place in the order of battle but the cost of building a fleet forces pragmatic generals to think out of the box - to prosecute an enemy target employing assets that are already in the inventory.

The fear is that the NGAD fighter will be another F-22 boondoggle. In looking at its priorities, it appears the US is giving priority to the Navy because on average its fleet is 25 to 30 years old and 40 to 50 years is end of life. The naval focus will be on smaller ships like destroyers and submarines. The F-35 will have to do and work needs to be done to improve its combat availability.

What the US is realizing is that both Russia and China have anti-aircraft/missile coverage and its patriot and iron dome systems have shown less than desired results. The Russians have a new version called the S-500 and the Chinese have both the Russian S=400 and its own defense shield. The reality shown in Ukraine reveals a war dominated by drones and missiles and if there is a lesson to be learned, that is where the US will probably focus on. Drones are cheaper than manned aircraft and they can do pretty much anything a manned aircraft can do at a more affordable price. Actually, the same goes for the navy. The navy is also having second thoughts about its carrier fleet and appears to be limiting its Ford class carriers from ten to four.

China is also moving in that direction with its newer LHD appearing to launch drones and a new entrant that appears to focus on drones only. China has implemented drones in the air, on the water, and below the water. The US seems focused now in the same direction.

In missiles, both Russia and China possesses operational hypersonic missiles, the US is still in the testing phase. Both Russia and China have air to air missiles with ranges exceeding 200 miles and the US has only recently achieved that milestone. Both Russia and China have ICBMs that can be launched from land, by air, and by submarines. The US likewise has these capabilities but is looking to upgrade these older missiles as recent tests have failed.

So one is led to believe that NGAD has probably lost its day under the sun because of costs.
