To travel through time is actually to travel through space meaning you're travelling through the spacetime continuum, so he's right, to travel back in time is to actually traverse time and space as time is linear but has differing dimensional planes as well as two sided to each plane as in life and death, two sides of the same coin, because everything has an equivalent or an opposite, so if one can go forward in time one can also go backwards too.

You would need to travel through space to go back in time.
The known universe exists on the surface of a bubble that is constantly expanding. Towards the center of the bubble is the past, the outside of the bubble (which we are expanding into) is the future.
To travel back in time, you'd need to find a way to break the surface of the bubble we exist on and travel back towards the center to where the earth was located in the past.

So, without getting super technical, what's the one thing "time travel" stories and film gloss over? That the earth, in the Sol system, in our arm of the Milky Way, in its area of the universe are currently hurdling like mad throughout space.
The location of earth in space ten minutes ago is not the same as it is now, and we're you able to remove yourself across time, you'd need to know where earth was *when* you wanted to stop, and get to that point somehow. Space/time are simplified like you wouldn't believe for TV/movies.
