With the snake lure I’d give it a steady retrieve, but give it a couple pauses around cover or target areas, or places a snake might actually stop for a second, but a steady retrieve looks like a good snake swim .

I had the chance to see a snake crossing a pond before and I noticed it was swimming very slowly in a regular pattern, it didn't stop at all until it reached the bank, then it took off. I'm suggesting the same technique, reel slowly without any sudden changes. I guess if you wanna give it any other action could be ok for something the Bass are not use to see. I used this lure and loved it my go to reeling is going to stop a little jerk, and you have the tail moving back-and-forth slowly usually does the job
