Despite strike action generally being considered unlawful throughout the nineteenth century (and until beyond the mid-twentieth century for many countries), its status as a fundamental right is now recognised by a large majority of countries through their ratification of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention concerning Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise (CO87).
