Woodturning Wide Sapele Platter / Bowl From Offcuts

Показать описание

I scored some sapele offcuts from an associate-not large enough individually. However, I could see a bowl or small platter - only larger. While I would prefer turning from a single piece of wood, I decided to glue three pieces together and go for it anyway. The wood is too beautiful to do otherwise.

Size: about 15 inches diameter by 2 inch, finished with wipe on poly.

Enjoy.

Really nice, Alan. You reinforced my philosophy that there's basically no such thing as scrap wood. It's just wood that hasn't been used yet.

The local Woodcraft store has wood by the pound sale from time to time. I scored a nice block of Sapele 3" x 9" x 12". I will be turning a similar item from the 3x9 and a few pens from the off cuts.

Nice use of the offcuts. And a very nice result.
Just curious about your hollowing methods. Some ( Richard Raffin and others ) drill a depth hole first. I could be wrong but I don't recall you ever doing that. Is there a reason or is it just the way you learned to do it? Not looking to quibble. You do nice work and get good results. Just looking for other opinions about how to do things.
