LYRICS

Never guess and never know
Losing everything you own
But just before you hit the red
Your best ideas hit your head

The ones you love will call you back
The regulars will treat you bad
A bolt of lightning from the blue
Now it’s really clear to you

Things may not work out how you thought
Things may not work out how you thought
Maybe it is good, maybe it is bad
Either way the only truth we have, is,
Things may not work out how you thought

Use a coin to scratch away
Your desperation on display
A different era starts to show
So different friends will come and go

The one you love will hurt you bad
But a stranger has your back
It’s sunny when it starts to snow
And that is when you really know

Things may not work out how you thought
Things may not work out how you thought
Maybe it is good, maybe it is bad
Either way the only truth we have, is,
Things may not work out how you thought

Things may not work out how you thought

Who keeps coming back to listen to this song every few months?

I just lost my best friend 12 days ago. We were traveling together and a truck hit us. She didn't come home with me. I was planning to have her in my life every step of the way. And coming to terms with her loss is taking a lot out of me. I'll never be the same. The world broke it's promise and I don't know if I'll ever trust it again, I don't think I even should. The power of sudden change and the sudden and awful return to normalcy reflected in the song are cathartic. This song captures something that is hard to talk about and helped me shed some tears that were hard to get to. It's brought me some peace and helped me feel less alone. It has been like a hymn to me that I'm always sort of singing in the background. I sing it when I'm working or alone and need a touchstone. I love it. Thanks.

My 6 year old son Arthur wants to me write the following to Louis: “This song is one of my favourite songs. I like it when you’re lying on the car. I’m learning about the drums and the piano.” I also want to thank you Louis for enriching our lives with your wonderful music.

I love that this guy who must be 30-35 years younger than me is able to capture so many strands of the favorite music of my life and still make it his own. Some of his stuff reminds me of Zappa. This reminds me of Yes or very early Genesis. Some Miles. Some Shorter. And his funk grooves are so funky my head nearly explodes. I like all of it.

Even years later, this song still brings existentialist comfort. We're all here together after all

This guy is as important as Bob Dylan. Let's treat him as such.

I just divorced my wife of 21 yrs due to her cheating.. the pain is unbearable.. 2kids. But I stood up and won’t allow her damaging ways to destroy me. This song gives me the release of tears to cleanse and move forward.

0:45 I love the shots of the camera "spinning" around Louis, but he's actually tiptoe-ing in a circle as smoothly as he can 😂

Visuals make me wonder what a vapourwave sitcom intro would look like.

I keep coming back to this video, especially recently.

I love how the last part of the song/video seems like Louis Cole lashing out or losing himself to the hurt it seems he is holding onto in the earlier part of the video. Then at the very end, you see the sky change and other people appear for the first time almost like Cole is coming back to reality after he has worked through some things in his mind.

At least that's how I see this piece of art.

Damn first experienced this song at my first Cory Wong show when the video was new. They played this while we were waiting for Cory and I watched the crowd go from bored to intrigued about "this guy in a robe" to straight entranced. By 2:30 the whole crowd was swaying and starting to cheer, at 3:00 people were erupting, the energy legit brought tears to my eyes. Louis Cole is a genius.

My dog just died and the first thing I wanted to do was watch this video. That same lightning is flashing across the sky in Nashville tonight, and I feel less alone now. Thank you, Louis.
