Storyline:
During the 1892 blizzard, pioneer ranching magnate Phil Evarts dies. His Hatchet Ranch is inherited by brother John and daughter Celia. However, much of the ranch is on free grazing land. Many of the local ranchers and cattlemen try to take advantage of Phil Evarts' death by grazing on this land and using its water for free. Ranchers Harve Garrison, Russ Schultz and Ray Cavanaugh desire the Hatchet Ranch's rich grazing land and take it with impunity. Others, like greedy rancher Bide Marriner, want it all for themselves. Even cattle rustlers, like Red Courteen, get involved by rustling cattle from the Evarts family whose power they resent. Because the old rancher Phil Evarts isn't around to protect the Hatchet Ranch anymore, his trusted foreman, Will Ballard, steps-in to safeguard the interests of Phil Evarts' heirs, especially Celia's whom he adores. Celia's fiance, Sam Danfelser, is the jealous type but Celia assures him that she only loves him and she only considers Will a good friend. When Celia's uncle is shot and killed by hired gunmen, sheriff Joe Kneen's help becomes essential to the Evarts. Sensing a difficult situation, the sheriff decides to send a wire message to Santa Fe, asking for federal Marshals' assistance. A panicked Bide Marriner shoots the sheriff in the back at the telegraph office. To make matters worse, Celia Evarts' fiance, Sam Danfelser, betrays her and sides with Bide Marriner's crew. He promises to kill Will Ballard out of jealousy and revenge. He rides in for the final confrontation with Hatchet Ranch's foreman, Will Ballard.

Reviews:

"Several offerings of this film are available on YouTube, and I'm surprised that so far there are only two reviews here on IMDB - and these sum up RTMD very well indeed.

The cast includes many well-known and not so-well-known actors from 1950s Westerns, all of whom acquit themselves well.

As has been suggested, there was a lot of plot crammed into 90 minutes, and the number of characters' names was such that I had to concentrate to work out who was who. And there were quite a few localities named.

The fight between Rod Cameron and Forrest Tucker was one of the most impressive I've seen in films of this period, and Ella Raines as Celia Evarts acquitted herself very well against the roughs who invaded her home.

The final shoot-out in the dark seemed short, almost to the point of being anticlimactic.

Fine story. Fabulous cast. I loved how Tucker's character changed from a sneering rogue to a man with a heart. Put tears in these old eyes. Wish I had a smile like Rod Cameron.

The fiery personality of Ella Raines and the dedicated hard nose ranch hand Chill Wills add to this excellent western.

What a great movie with a lot of great actors and one stunning Ella Raines....!! I thought it interesting to see Jim Davis so young and playing a 'bad guy'. Rod Cameron was fearless; I would have been afraid of him too..!! And I always enjoy any movie Brian Donlevy is in; I love the way he talks. He had a good series in the early 50's called "Dangerous Assignment" where he played a U.S. government special agent battling the world's bad guy agents.

Hatchet Ranch road is between Colorado City and Pueblo CO. Many of the old westerns are built around real events.

To begin with, this story was based on some history 130 odd years ago. When I was young, that was an eternity But Now it Doesn't seem that it was really that long ago. My mums 93. So yes, How Much Technology has evolved since then? Wow.

If this movie was shot in Montana in the 1950's then it was a truly a beautiful place ... but perhaps closer to Hollywood .. maybe the Sierras? Still beautiful.

A better than average 'A' western with many great srars and character actors. Ella Raines, Barbara Britton, Brian Donlevy, Forest Tucker, J. Carrol Naish at the sheriff. Hero Rod Cameron (1910-1983) like John Wayne started out in Hollywood films as a stuntman. From Wiki: "When cowboy star Johnny Mack Brown left Universal Pictures for Monogram Pictures, Cameron replaced him as Universal's western series star. He then appeared in many westerns and other films for Republic Pictures including 'Santa Fe Passage' (1955), and later 'The Gun Hawk' (1963), 'Requiem for a Gunfighter' (1965) and 'The Bounty Killer' (1965). Cameron himself guest starred in many TV westerns. Cameron also starred in three syndicated television series." Personal quote: "I got on a horse and that was my big mistake. I didn't even know how to ride a horse when I came to Los Angeles. Even after I did 400 episodes on three different detective series, 'Coronado Nine', 'City Detective' and 'State Trooper', casting directors would say "Oh yes, Rod Cameron, the cowboy"."
