There are distinct advantages to using an electric cooler over a conventional cooler with ice:
1. You can maintain an accurate temperature for food safety;
2. You can keep frozen items frozen; and
3. You don't have to worry about melted ice ruining your food.

We've been traveling in our RV with an electric cooler for over a year, so when Newair offered to send us one of their 48-quart dual zone electric coolers to test and evaluate, we jumped on the opportunity.

I bought a 12V fridge more than a dozen years ago. My old dog was on insulin and it was the only way I'd get to go camping. It's great for those long trips to the store and back..

Hi Marc and Patricia!! Whooaaa...your timing is impeccable. We are in the midst of deciding between a nice cooler or an electric fridge. Back to our mission statement: monthly 1-2 week boondock trips in CO and immediate surrounding states. My guess is the cooler would definitely fizzle out on the second week. And, since we are considering exclusive boondocking (read: away from towns), going back to town for more ice would be inconvenient. Of course, it would be smart to knock out a few trips so as to determine the actual need. But...it is also the REI member discount week for their yetis and dometics.

We've got 500 amp hrs in the rig battery system, so I suspect one of these powered fridges won't significantly drain our batteries.

Oh...I don't think I told you. I was called on 17 Feb by the owner of the campground in town where we store our travel trailer. His snowplow driver hit our trailer in the front right corner; penetrating both the front part and the side part of that corner area :-( The rig is up in Delta CO at one of our local experts for repair. Allegedly, repairs were going to start today-ish. He doesn't have an indoor facility, so is somewhat hostage to outside temperatures for the fiberglass repairs. This incident has somewhat killed our planned desert extravaganzas this late winter as the temps are nice out there :-(

It was a grand christmas. I have the funds on hand, when combined with the rei 20% discount, to get like a dometic 55cfx. But...one of these that you are highlighting sure saves some $$$!

Do you have an opinion of this 48qt vs their bigger 80ish qt model?

Also, did they provide the battery option for you to test, as well?

2 additional benefits, which are similar to what you mentioned, are 1) we live approx 38 miles from our food store. This would be great in the summer months for our Walmart food runs.

This makes sense. When we are just starting out, the refrigerator and freezer are not down to temperature yet and this would help in the meantime.
Same with going to get groceries as you mentioned.

Whether its this or other brand refrigerator, as someone who has been using one myself for 3 years... it is one of the best investments an RVer can make. Even if you have no plans to use it as a freezer, you can stock up into main fridge, plus shove a bunch of stuff here and standard size fridge + this will last you 7 days at a national park. I have got one for that very reason but it came in super handy for my 2021 trip to Utah/Colorado. Right now as I am planning a 2023 trip to Utah, I have found a permanent space for it in my RV where it will live out the rest of its service life.

Nice review Marc. If I was living from a van like I did in the 70's motorcycle racing, I'd certainly buy one. For our Class A rig, we just don't have the room to store it, but it is a "cool" fridge, and reasonable price.

This compressor freezer represents a good value, especially considering all the features that my Alpicool did NOT come with. I’ll consider this unit on my next upgrade (though I may have to raise the bed…)

I have the Dometic 75, which is bigger and more expensive. I used to have another brand that only had one zone, but having two is great. This seems like a very good value for its size and features. And although is does have wheels, I would like to see it with rubber wheels, rather than plastic.
