Emirates has relatively smaller number. But you need to consider they have ALL Wide body fleet. Widebody airliners are almost four times as expensive as a 737 or a320

After delivery, it will be two indian airlines, indigo and air india at first and second. They have combined ordered 1000+ airplanes from boeing and airbus along with their existing fleet.

The numbers are inflated for the big US carriers because they include all their subsidiary regional airlines as well.
If you look at the break down of aircraft types a majority part of that huge number is small regional jets.

During cold war Aeroflot was the biggest, they operate A300, some Boeings and Almost every commercial Soviet plane being them Prototypes, Experimental or Adapted bombers for transport people
