In this tenth video of the chess fundamentals series, FM Elliott explains the three different phases of a chess game. The three phases opening, middlegame and endgame can occur during a game and each phase has its characteristics. The opening phase of a game usually takes place over the first 10-15 moves but there is no fixed rule for it. The middlegame arises from the opening phase and in the middlegame the strategic long-term planning takes place. The endgame arises out of the middlegame phase and lasts until the end of a game.

Hi, I'm finding these extremely helpful. Thank you! However can you clear up one point for me? In your Stages V 'practice test' accompanying this video you state at one point " White cannot take the Queen as Black would play 1...Rxd6 which results in a direct checkmate." I've looked at this again and again but what I think you mean is: 1...Rxd1. Square d1 not d6.Or am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any clarification!
