Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta clashed with Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg during a fiercely contested pre-season friendly between the two north London rivals.

The Gunners travelled to N17 on Sunday afternoon for their final warm-up match before the new Premier League season starts on Friday night, with Arsenal kicking off the campaign away to newly promoted Brentford.

But far from the match being used simply to build up fitness, it was a blood and thunder affair with both teams looking to claim bragging rights despite only being a friendly

Dele Alli got in the book in the first half with a rash tackle on Nicolas Pepe, while Alexandre Lacazette responded in kind not long after with a hard challenge on Oliver Skipp.

It was not only the players who were fired up, with Arteta involved in a spat with Hojbjerg shortly after half-time.

The Dane was racing along the touchline, near the dugouts, and slid in to try and keep the ball in play, narrowly missing Arteta who had strayed ever so slightly outside his technical area.

They exchanged heated words, with Hojbjerg complaining that Arteta was practically on the pitch as he walked back to his position, with the Spaniard responding by putting his finger to his lips and ‘ssshing’ the Spurs man.
