Great episode! Ben Hsu needs his own DRIVE show, or, at the very least a regular appearance on AFTER/DRIVE.

I think the RX-7 is probably my favorite Japanese car. Need for speed and Fast and the Furious were also responsible for the JDM scene growth along with Grand turismo.

Fun fact, GM was actually working on a rotary for the vette back in its original concept as a motor but they just couldn't figure it out. if not for that, all vettes could have been rotary powered up until today. (in alternate universe of course.)

Vr4, Supra, FD but no mention of the z32? The z32 that won Le Mans, won Daytona, won multiple IMSA championships, set Bonneville land speed records and did such with no competition from any of the others you mentioned? At least he talked about the S30 432 and such

I was lucky enough to be stationed in Japan, (Okinawa and Yokosuka), in the 90's and 00's. At the time, R-32s and 33s were a dime a dozen, and even though GT-Rs commanded more, one could still very easily afford one. Heck, I had two. But honestly, in the real world, my favorite car in Japan was the single turbo, RWD '89 R-32 GT-ST. What a stupid fun car, especially for $2500. The balance was good, it wasn't complicated to tune or maintain, but most of all, it felt light, tossable, and solid. Man, I miss that car... Nice episode, /Drive :)

Hey Mike, can you guys please do a video tour of the Classic Car of Manhattan shop, and post it on the DRIVE youtube channel!?

Is this a possibility?

I mean, you guys have some pretty sweet rides, a lot of different types and variations...

I think your viewers, including me, would very much like to see it!

I live in Ontario Canada, so coming down to NY for an actual tour, sadly, isn't an option for me :(

Really really cool episode, you can tell that Mike was enjoying it, didn't show love for the nsx I think that's one of the coolest Japanese cars, loved those really old models Toyota and Nissan...also that white on white integra type r looks amazing...

Of all the videos you guys have done this is the first that made me want to subscribe to drive + because NO ONE ELSE is doing this stuff.  Kudos for making this video.

You are right c0rpse.
My first car was a 1974 Mazda RX4 Coupe.
I put 120, 000 kms on it, did heaps of (street and strip)drag racing in it and drove it around Australia in the height of summer.
It was a fantastic car.It never broke.
I then bought a 1974 Datsun 240Z which was a brilliant car.My first taste of what a good handling/steering sports car was like.Off road you could go sideways basically all day and it wouldn't miss a beat.It could take repeated 60mph handbrake turns on public roads(in the dry) and smoothly and reliably stop within a foot or so of your intended spot.
I now drive a 1994 Toyota MR2 GT-S Turbo.
If you ever wanted an awesome Japanese sports car...go buy one.
I expect it too will become a much sort after classic JDM car.
