I have always called it a watch pocket, I don't ever remember being told this I just knew it was a watch pocket for some reason.

BTW I'm pretty sure it actually comes from the railroad, time was extremely important to rail workers, and many of those guys were wearing work dungarees.
No vest means they needed another pocket for their watch.

I just use ther pocket for my flashlight and sometimes pocket knife if I'm carrying 2.
