A game changer or a boondoggle? We'll find out in time - but if YouTube pulls off what they are claiming to be doing it will change this platform forever.

Despite everything, I'm still with Tom Scott here:
"YouTube's copyright system isn't broken, the world's is."

How much do you want to bet that YouTube is either opening another can of worms OR starts collecting royalties themselves?

3:20 - To put it another way, greedy lawyers of copyright owners do whatever they can to prevent _free promotion_ of owners' content, and idiot owners are _paying_ them for that.

Also, copyright laws are broken, of course. People who take down somebody else's content with baseless copyright claim should be liable for damages, including punitive damages.

Could be a step in the right direction, but this needs to have full disclosure to the YouTube Content Creator of who is being paid and how much otherwise someone posting their own musical creation might end up enriching some company that has no rights to that music.

David Bennet does great music theory videos, but he's constantly getting hit because he has to play an excerpt from the song to show what he's discussing. (songs that add a beat, songs that skip a beat, songs that use some type of chord progression, etc.) As a non musician, I enjoy his videos, but I can see how frustrating it must be for him. I hope this helps.

What's the catch? I would not underestimate Youtube's ability to screw it up.

I hope you are correct. It would make YouTube come alive!

Musician/composer here - It’s a complicated situation but keep a few things in mind. First, YT will only sign a deal with some PROs (or their equivalents), so you’ll only have access to those who sign up. Second, YT already has deals with the major PROs for those who opt in - I get YT royalties from ASCAP every quarter. Third, the major PROs really only represent the interests of the major publishers and songwriters, often at the expense of smaller songwriters/composers. Bottom line is the music royalty setup we have is built for a time long gone. We need to figure out how to hit the reset button and start over. PROs are an anachronism. The vast majority of royalties around the world are collected without PROs. For example, there’s no PRO administering the rights to intellectual property from Google and Apple and Microsoft and Samsung. There’s certainly nobody telling them what their cut of the revenues is, which is exactly what PROs do. Could you imagine a governing body telling Apple what it’s getting paid for an iPhone? Ridiculous, right? Well, that’s exactly what PROs do, and their breakdowns are weighted heavily towards the big players. But I digress…. Too complicated to fully explain here. Bottom line is if YT signs a deal there will likely be a lot of small guys screwed in the process and you still won’t have carte blanche rights to use whatever music you want.

My friend Francois is going to be really happy. He has a complicated DJ setup and can remix songs on the fly. He has a dozen or so examples on his channel but often gets a copyright strike.

It's ABOUT TIME that youtube is taking some action that, in the long run, will benefit the copyright holders.

No matter if they ban music in videos or make creators pay for it, it's bad for access to culture. That's why I'm fond of bands officially publishing their music, full albums even - because it's usually not the band or artist who's behind these copyright trolls, but a greedy corporation.

Cautiously optimistic is right. I really hope they do this, they must have some arrangement already to operate YouTube Music, it would be nice if it was just a matter of extending it to the rest of youtube, but these things are never that simple.

I think most people under the age of 30 get most of their media diet on YouTube. May YOU wouldn't deign to be on YouTube, but, well...

To that end, the TikTok sea shanty craze was sort of an "up yours" to copyright holders and that was a few years ago. What's it like now?

This concept is fantastic for the sake of archiving historic video and film. Humanity's biggest asset is its ability to stand on the shoulders of giants, as the metaphor goes. Being able to reference previous content is so important, as seen in academia, where everyone builds off of everyone else's past work. I'm sure deciding the royalty split vs. any original content the uploader added, vs. Google's cut, is going to be a bit nightmarish, but this is how it _should_ be.

OMG, this would be amazing...

I really hope they do something about it. One of my friends posted a video this morning of his new track that he wrote himself and just released this morning. And this afternoon it was taken down for copyright !. But its his track and he just released it.

Are those Frander amps behind you?
Let keep our fingers crossed. That's one the things holding me back from continuing work on my channel.
