Synthetic Intelligence Forum is excited to convene a session titled "Towards a New Science of Common Sense" with Ron Brachman, PhD (Professor of Computer Science, Cornell University).

Topic: The notion of common sense has long intrigued AI researchers, yet it seldom occupies the spotlight. AI pioneer John McCarthy's early papers referenced the notion of common sense in the context of AI and numerous scholars have continued to study this topic. However, an AI system that exhibits truly common-sense behavior remains elusive. This talk explains the limitations of current AI systems in demonstrating common sense behavior.

Prof. Brachman reasons that countless instances of AI systems failing to exhibit common sense can be attributed to an overemphasis on specialized knowledge. Efforts to overcome the rigidity of AI, even within the realm of contemporary deep learning, have typically involved accumulating numerous small pieces of commonsense knowledge. However, amassing such knowledge fragments does not equate to a system capable of exhibiting human-like common sense. He outlines preliminary findings from a comprehensive investigation of common sense than previously undertaken, recognizing its complexity and the need for dedicated scientific inquiry.
