In this video, we’re going to look at the history of Turkey’s relations with the EU; how Erdogan is trying to leverage Europe’s Trump-related anxieties about its security to restart Turkey’s accession; and whether this might actually work.

Long answer: definitely no.

No offence to Turkey (okay maybe a little offence) but why on Earth would we accept them at this point? They’re basically a larger version of Hungary, and they’re enough of a problem as it is

1% chance it happens, EU would definitely not accept turkey

Has Turkey shown any progress towards adopting EU rules? No. Therefore, what is the point of this video?

Turkey hasn’t „waited“. They have pretty actively asserted that they do not feel bound by any of the EU rules.
Also, who wants them in the Schengen zone?

Bro went from “I’ll open all the borders, so the refugees can overwhelm EU” to “it’s a prank bro, let me join”

As a Turk, if we'll accepted in the EU, i'm sure we'll be the only member because others will left immediately 😂

Trying to remedy one headache by creating a bigger one? Who came up with this idea LOL

We already have Hungary. Why would the EU want yet another headache like that in the form of Turkey?

I am from Cyprus and Turkey will never join EU for two reasons.
1) Turkey does not recognize an EU member state, Cyprus. There has to be a solution to the Cypriot question which Turkey does not seem willing to solve right now.
2) Even if the Cyprus question is solved, Turkey has the highest population of all countries in EU. This means that will have huge influence in everything by day 1 just from voting. Germany, France and Italy are never going to accept this.

Who even comes up with these topics? Chat GPT?

I think Yemen or Tanzania have a higher chance of joining the EU than Turkey at this point 😂

According to all members of the EU Turkey is illegally occupying half of Cyprus, so how exactly are they going to allow Turkey to join?

Short answer: No. Longer answer: Hell no.

The problem with Turkey is that it is regressing socially under current leadership. They have lost control of their currency true bad policy, and that alone is a good reason to avoid them for the time being.

I don't think Cyprus agrees with Turkey joining

I genuinely hope not. We got enough problems in Turkey as it is we don't need to shoulder even more burden by joining the EU. Nor do they want us.

It is a peaceful existence we have, they are there and we are here. Let's keep it that way.

Until 2013/14, Turkey was on the path to become an EU member state, made a ton of constitutional reforms, it had a fast growing economy, managed to break free from the high inflation/high interest cycle. It all changed when Erdogan decided to pursue his wild dreams, being the strong autocrat he always wanted to be. 10 years later, Turkey does not have the conditions to be even considered for EU membership. First of all, it needs to depose the incumbent regime/president hopefully through democratic means and then makes constitutional changes to transfer presidential powers to the parliament. Changes of that happening next couple of decades are very slim.

While the EU obviously gets to make the final decision on whether to admit Turkey or not, until that moment comes the progress of Turkey towards accession is basically entirely in Turkey's hands. The EU has certain criteria that need to be fulfilled. If Turkey changes its policies and fulfills the criteria, then the political decision can be made. Until then, any talk about Erdogan's intentions or the EU needing Turkey are meaningless in terms of Turkey's actual accession to the EU.

A direct border between the EU and the heart of the Middle East.
What could go wrong?
