E-scouting is a huge advantage. Studied GIS in college, prior to ever hunting anything. Decided to hunt elk as my first hunt ever, without any mentors or assistance other than packers. Easily found ideal areas for elk based of time of year. Found a herd on day 4, had a bull packed out and hung up by end of day 5 thanks to this sort of thinking (all as a solo first timer!).

As usual randy has more information packed in his head than anyone else I’ve listened to

I don't know if you've written books on this, but I'd definitely buy the books. This is a wealth of information, thank you.

I wish OnX had that terrain tool. But it has a lot of features I use that I can't switch from it.

So what if you're looking at an area that is mostly thick timber and there aren't too many extreme slopes so they could be bedding almost anywhere? At that point do you single out the meadows to try to find the elk? And since elk feed from night to morning should I just take my sleeping bag and spend all night at each meadow until I find elk?

Randy, thanks for the info it was great. However, I believe you left any important element out of your list. Elk are large animals and require a lot of water and it's not always available in the feed/forage area. Just thought I would mention that.

Thanks Randy! Great useful content. When would you suggest starting field scouting a new area for a hunt in mid November?
