President Biden says US will defend Taiwan if China attacks - BBC News

President Joe Biden said the US would defend Taiwan if China attacked, in an apparent departure from a long-held US foreign policy position.

But a White House spokesman later told some US media outlets that his remarks did not signify a change in policy.

The US has a law which requires it to help Taiwan defend itself.

If Biden is serious the first thing he should do is have the USA officially recognise Taiwan as an independent nation.

Saying this while the US hasn't recognised Taiwan as a sovereign nation tells me straight away this is just hot air.

On one hand, US: "We do not recognize Taiwan as a nation. We would defend Taiwan from China."
On the other hand, US: "We keep the One China policy."
So what does it actually mean?

Don’t forget that Taiwan has TSMC, the Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation. Around HALF of all semiconductors in the entire world are made in Taiwan. And TSMC makes some of the most advanced chips in the world. Disruption to the production and distribution of these chips would mean economic impacts in nearly every single economic sector across most countries. Many governments who could give two shits about Taiwan’s democracy would be opposed to a Chinese invasion simply for that reason.

China doesn't need to use military force. Its winning in the finance section. While the western political leaders are focused on gender identity and climate change, China is expanding its coal and oil farms and investing trillions into its military. If the path carries on as it is China will financially dominate the western world within a few short years. That means those tactics like sanctions on countries etc will be more powerful and beneficial for them to influence the west, than it would with the west trying it with China. Also i have a sneaky suspicion what's only my opinion is that a lot of our leaders deep down don't really care. In their eyes less power for us is more power for them.
