I talk to people who visited societies that are fear based, like in Africa, and they say the people are so friendly and nice. I think that is part of it. I am from Appalachian stock and we are friendly until we aren't. My ancestors fought and had feuds at a drop of a hat. We took something "noble" like the Revolutionary War and turned it into Civil War Zero. Any tyrant gets killed, shot, or lied to. We are an terrible, unruly, and awful people. Fear based rule simply doesn't work as straight forward as the ancient days with us.

The "Old Testament God" did not rule through fear. He did bring destruction on His enemies, and on the enemies of His people. But at some point you have to acknowledge Him as God, the Supreme Ruler. Just read the story of Jonah to see what happens to people who acknowledge Him as God.

I know the whole "the Old Testament God is evil" thingy, which, I really have no opinion on since I'm still studying the Old Testament, ancient Judaism differed A LOT from the polytheistic religions of that time. Humans weren't seen as slaves and workers of the gods, but rather rulers and keepers of creation on Earth, basically God's "Summum bonum" of creation. Sacrifice was still part of ancient Judaism, but it had a different meaning than in the Greek or Babylonian polytheistic systems. Just saying.
