Si caught up with Simon Warren, author of the 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs books, who is most certainly not a fan of new tech – we took him out for a ride to see what he thinks of this super-modern bike! 👀

Mountain bikers here are very confused about this debate. The question isn’t disc vs pads it’s how big are the rotors and how many pistons 😂

Thankfully we have some random edge lord to tell us what bike to buy so we can not be sheep.

Rim brakes use the surface of an expensive wheel as the braking surface. Disc brakes use an expendable rotor as the braking surface. I know which one I prefer. But each to their own.

Cars were driving fine without abs and airbags. Why did they go and ruin them!

14 years ago I was coming down a 6, 000 decent scared to death and exhausted by the time I got to the bottom. I will be doing that same descent in a couple of days on my disc brake bike with absolutely no worries. In fact I’ve done far steeper, rougher and overall riskier descents on disc brakes with far less effort than I used to face with rim brakes on easier roads.

Sure pros can do incredible speeds on rim brakes, but Im not pro and I value being able to easily slow down when Im uncomfortable. There’s also plenty of rides when they aren’t necessary but I only have one “road bike” and I need it to do everything. Id argue the “sheep” are the ones buying new rim brake bikes just because someone on the internet shared a disc brake conspiracy theory and they don’t want to be a “sheep”, not because it’s what they actually want.

When disc brakes (and gravel bikes) came out they directly solved a need that many of us had been asking for already. It wasn’t a new idea it was a “It took them long enough!” Situation.

(Totally understand many of you are holding onto older bikes or just love rim brakes and that’s great, everyone is welcome to the party)

i like how my disc brakes dont melt on long descents while mountain biking

Riding on rim brake with carbon wheel is downright dangerous on rainy days. I found out the hard way. Luckily, I didn't skid and fall.

increased weight in the annoying disc rub noise from heat warping. difficult to travel with. difficult to mount racks. they stop well sure, but cantilevers have been stopping 400+ lb tandems for decades. i do like 'em on my mountain bikes tho

I dont mind the extra 50€ that the disc brakes may cost me, but the fact that a mid-quality bike will cost you 3000-5000€ is what's beyond me. As long as I have to buy old and used bikes to still be able to pay rent, whatever tech is on there is gonna have to make do - and that's mostly rim brakes

All i can hear is an old stubborn man who is afraight of evolving and progressing. Because of people Like him we still use Fax in Germany

Aren’t the old brakes operating under less stress since they had more leverage- grabbing the outer circumference of the wheel..

I've had rim brakes fail to stop me from going down steep hills. I swapped to discs, and no problems stopping.

Even if 70% people wanted disc brakes and 30% rim, its still profitable to make both types. But they deleted rim road bikes totally

I rode BMX seriously from 15-25. Rim brakes were fine at skate parks and dirt jumps. Getting into MTB and road riding in my mid 30s with disks was a major step up in the brakes department. I’m no stranger to rim brakes but I’d never run them on my road bike or MTB. Sure they work, old washboards down by the river work too. Still chucking my laundry in the washing machine

So long as I can keep getting parts for my 5 year old bike, I don't care what new fangle shit they are pushing.

Interesting conversation to be having in the rain. Bet everyone’s happy to have discs when they get to the bottom of a hill.

I have disc brakes and they work perfectly with no noise, I don't see the problem with disc being popular or the reason someone would call others sheep for using an effective product

I’ve recently bought an old rim brake bike as a winter beater. My summer bikes have discs. The rim brakes require more ongoing maintenance, cleaning, adjusting etc than any disc brake bike I’ve owned. And they just don’t make you stop even with pricey pads! Once they’re set up properly, you forget about discs. I’d take them anyday!
