It's the results of photonic ablation( which means to carry away, like the color of a sign that's absorbed too much sunlight and faded). The photons actually carries any color away and fades the colors vividness. If the ablation is intense enough it causes heat. Such as is done by a magnifying. But if the exposed surface is pure white the effect cannot take place. One of the best places to see this are the videos of atomic blast research done by the u.s. army. There is one of a house that gets destroyed by the blast but before the blast hits it it smokes and starts to burn as the paint on the structure is ablated away.
