One of the easiest and most effective ways to improve liver function and help in the detoxification of excess hormones is by improving bile. The best way to do this is to consume bitter foods. Bitter foods are not readily consumed in western countries. It’s not a taste that many people enjoy but is so important for keeping the liver and gall bladder working smoothly. Coffee is the most widely consumed bitter in western countries, but outside of coffee, bitter foods are not well tolerated. Because coffee is a bitter, it can have great benefits for the liver, but for those women who can’t tolerate coffee well (like me) or women who know they need to reduce caffeine in order to help lower their stress hormones, dandelion tea is a nice caffeine free alternative with powerful actions on the liver. Dandelion is also diuretic just like coffee, and probably even more so (it will make you go to the toilet more often), is a strong bitter that helps increase bile flow in the lover and gallbladder and can be a great tool for those with fatty liver disease, gall bladder issues and estrogen dominance. It’s also important for those with lower oestrogen especially in the peri-menopause transition. There is a significant loss of bile with the loss of estrogen during that time which contributes to the huge increase in gall bladder issues among women that are 45 + in age.
Dandelion tastes similar to coffee (but not that same) and in my opinion is a bit of an acquired taste. I love adding nut butter to mine to turn it into a latte. It makes it more creamy and delicious and also helps to stabilise blood sugar more. You can find the full recipe exclusively in my book “Eating for Hormone Balance, a plant-based guide” which you can find linked in my bio.
