I worked on oil rigs many years ago and had an interesting conversation with a recent graduate. They explained that a requirement for all new engineers (HP) was several months working on the rig, not just observing. The reason was to make sure they understood why things were set up they were. HP did not want to waste time or resources on new ideas that were not practical for today or tomorrow’s applications. HP rigs are some of the most well thought out rigs you’ll find. Perhaps automakers could learn something from this approach

As a tech I have always hated this.... Glad you are calling this out. All engineers have to do is take 30 minutes and ask a mechanic what they think.

I know a retired GM engineer who says GM has been intentionally designing poor engines because they make more in parts than car sales.

As a mechanic/technician for 35 years at the time I became a operational supervisor for a municipal fleet that had multiple vehicles with covers that idled for long periods and had overheat issues. My first order of business was to get rid of them covers. Took care of a lot of concerns. Now part time in the private sector I recommend to customers to rid of it.

I believe Mercedes Benz started these stupid engines covers and air cleaners over 30 years ago. Manufacturers no longer need to tidy up their engines, they simply cover the mess of wires and hoses. I’m old enough to remember when engines looked good uncovered!
