Priti Patel resigns home secretary, as Liz Truss begins cabinet reshuffle

Priti Patel has announced that she is resigning as home secretary today, 5 September, ahead of a potential cabinet reshuffle by the new Conservative Party leader Liz Truss.

The cabinet minister is widely expected to be replaced by Suella Braverman on Tuesday, 6 September, when Ms Truss takes over as prime minister from Boris Johnson.

Earlier on Monday, Ms Patel had told opposition MPs to “shut up” as she defended her record as home secretary over the last three years.
