William Eugene Smith is my great grandfather on my dad's side. To see Johnny Depp acting as him is incredible!

This has been out for months in Europe. It's certainly the most beautifully cinematographised film of the year

So awesome to see this man back in films. Hope it continues. He can play any part you toss at him. I love when he plays parts to bring his strange side out. Hope him and Tim work together soon.

As a photographer myself, W. Eugene Smith touched my heart. My soul has lost my world as a photographer but it is still on fire with justice and I miss more than anything to be an image maker as I was. I would love to see this film.

😘💕I'm so happy that Johnny Depp's movie was released here in America. Looking forward to seeing it. He's a heck of an actor and every character he does, this man of so many talents has never disappointed me. He delivers those talents quite well and beautifully. Congratulations Mr. Depp on your release of your Minamata and on your come back to the screen.💕

In the early 1970's, a group of college-age photographers were discussing the environment. One question that hung in the air was: How do you show the effects of pollution on people? The subject went unanswered, and we went on to other subjects. Then W. Eugene Smith's work on what was then called "Minamata disease" came up in the news and photography magazines. In time, the story broke, and Chisso Chemical company's Mercury dumping came to light. Books, articles, and documentaries followed, but it was soon eclipsed by the continuing war in Vietnam. This dramatic tale sounds interesting, since Japan has become vigilant on environmental matters.

I remember when these photos came out -- so terrifying and powerful -- Smith saved lives.

Such stories still happen every day, and the bullies get more arrogant, and bend laws through corruption.
Movies like this may help awaken people on how to stop it. At the least wonder about it.

Not sure why Depp's character sings a Bob Dylan song ("Forever Young") in 1971, two years before it was recorded, and three years (1974) before it was released. Depp's character dies in 1973. The synopsis says Smith used a Nikon camera but in the movie, Smith is using a Minolta.
