i found 2 simpler patterns that work:

your start position for both patterns is the pull lever that resets the puzzle.

1. step on the square right in front of the lever. now move counterclockwise and step on all the non corner tiles (there's 4 including the one you started at), then one more step into the center tile. you've pretty much made a plus sign + voila the east door opens.

reset the puzzle at the lever

2. from the lever step into the tile up and to the right of you and keep going in a counterclockwise direction stepping on ALL tile along the perimeter. you'll reach the tile directly in front of the lever and presto west door opens.

Thank you. I hate with passion all kinds of puzzles. I was almost tearing my hair out of anger after 2 minutes of trying to do it by myself. It's terrible if you start messing with it and then try to "undo it" and forget about the fact that you can reset it with the lever, lol.
