About 7 years ago the U.S. Army war-gamed the Russian Battalion Tactical Group concept (which is what the Russians are using in Ukraine, and what they used in Ukraine in 2014, and in Syria a few years ago). The Army picked apart the concept and came up with a list of vulnerabilities to exploit, and a table of action-response tasks to defeat it. It appears either the Army gave or trained the Ukrainians on the lessons they learned for that war-game, or the Ukrainians found it on-line. Because they are doing everything - to the letter - that's in the current US Army playbook for the Russian Battalion Tactical Group concept.

The russian army is known to be extremely weak. During the Winter War they almost lost the war with Finland, a country without an army who was fighting against an army with numbers 20-1, and yet only had to stop fighting because they ran out of bullets. One single Finnish soldier killed more than 600 russians...

The Russian strategy seems simply to lay waist to as many people (including civilians) and structures as possible. Will Putin avoid a war-crimes tribunal? Only by suicide.

That story in the Wall Street Journal was just stunning. The Ukrainians blew up two bridges into the region and blocked every road into town except one and guess what? the Russian lined up at night and came down that road in a long line of tanks, supply trucks, and fuel trucks at night and were ambushed all the way down the line. There are pictures of dead Russian soldiers in morgues and in the fields, some being picked up and others being buried in the fields.
