Electrician here: your smokie is wired in so that it will work using mains power. The battery is in case of a power outage. It only beeps signaling that it’s low so you’ll know to change it so it will function in an outage. The typical batteries they come with are somewhat hit or miss. Change it once with a good Duracell and you’ll never hear from it again.

If the power is out, the battery is used to power said detector.

I think they don't hard wire the smoke detectors like you want because if lightning (or something else) causes the power to go out AND lights the house on fire the alarm will still sound. Just guessing, but it begged for an answer! Bothered me a bit so I had to reply after deep thought

the battery is there because fires happen when the power is out.

you dont want to completely have hard wired, cuz if there is a fire the wires could be burned and then it becomes useless and wont make the sound to tell you of a problem..
