The Vatican has returned three fragments of the Parthenon sculptures to Greece in a move that has been described as a "gesture of friendship".

The decision to return the 2,500-year-old marbles was announced by Pope Francis last year.

Greece hopes the move will spur other overseas institutions that hold Parthenon sculptures, including the British Museum, to return them.

I love how nobody wants to mention Britain, just saying "others" might want to follow the example. :-) :-)

The UK should also be returning artefacts to Greece and other places. We have no business holding onto cultural items that are not our own and I have no time for the silly excuses as to why we have them in the first place and why we should hold onto them. Unless that country has specifically said that we can hold onto them or where an international body such as UNESCO deem that returning an item to a place would mean it being likely destroyed and lost for all humanity. E.g. when ISIS destroyed a statue of Buddha carved into a rock and other artefacts.

The British Museum has the most stolen artifacts in the world. Even the stones in their royal jewelry collections, if not all, are mostly stolen during the colonial period. I hope UK follows.

It is nice to see the Vatican setting a good precedent.

Imagine if it was the British Museum, it'd be completely empty.

My respect to the Vatican authorities for having the courage to recognize the people of Greece as the legitimate owners of this pieces. I hope the British authorities follow the example and return the pieces they are still holding hostage.

Now they need to return everything else they stole including what they have locked up in their library.

I respect the Vatican for returning artifacts that belong to the rightful owner. Others need to do what is morally right and return items that were taken without permission.
