Martin D-28 (2017) Versus Martin HD-28

I did a demo in a store today that was unplanned. I only had my iPhone with me. I wanted to hear if the 2017 D-28 was warmer and woodier and maybe more 'acoustic guitar sounding' compared to the HD-28 which is always impressive with harmonics exploding from the sound hole. But with the added sparkle and harmonic richness, it can sound a little more piano-esque opposed to an acoustic guitar. *Over generalized comment for lack of a better frame of reference.

The Strings on the D-28 were probably still factory issued and the shop has had this guitar for at least 4 months. The HD-28 seemed freshly strung. I commented on that in the video. I think D-28 with fresh strings might be arguably more impressive. I liked it a lot as is. I think the HD-28 was not the newest/current model since it had large grover tuning gears. Not sure what year it was.

Great comparison and one of the best Martin demos I’ve heard. The clarity of the individual notes on the D28 make it my favorite of the 2, the HD28 sounds a little mushy.

Standard D28 is more balanced. Not as bass forward as the HD is. Those 60’s & 70’s songs we grew up listening to were standard D28’s. Just my preference.

This guy has an extremely nice touch and pressure on the strings. Not that his technical ability is bad but nice touch is very rare and always love to hear it. touch is what really makes a great player. good stuff my man congrats

I am so delightfully lightened by your review, so analytical and you confirmed my impressions, I am convinced that the different bracing (leaving back the string age difference) means a lot, more woody and organic the standard, more richness and piano timbered the HD: I bought the reimagined that have open small gears, a dream for me, the D28 reimagined (with aged top and antique white binding, turtle pick guard, open gears and forward bracing) better encountered my taste (I prefer a more controlled, intimated sound as evident in your second piece CSN sound real, but pushing more can ring as the holy bells!) I like both and have been partial to the hd-28 until the reimagined d-28 came out. Went into Gruhns for an HD and left with a non Scalloped masterpiece of a d-28

A thing not many folk talk about when doing these type of acoustic guitar comparison videos is the thickness of the pics they are using, a thin pick would create a different sound than a thick one, go try it out.

Both sound great! I have a 2017 D28 Standard and love it. I do love the herringbone on the HD, though. In any event, it's all subjective and preferential. I'll take either and be a very happy man.

I've always found the HD-28 too boomy.
You could take on a roving band of killer choir boys, at Christmastime, with a D-28.
Shut 'em all down, and still sound right.
Even in Chelsea day-o.

Definitely prefer the standard D-28. The HD sounds muddy to me. But then I have always liked the standard D-28 sound better than any acoustic guitar sound.

I wonder if the HD had the older strings and the D the newer, the differences would have been less.
Tonight my '99 HD28 has strings 4 gigs old, and it sounds as flat and lacking boom response as you could imagine.
New strings makes a big difference.

I finally was able to purchase a new Martin D-28 reimagined this past weekend. Looks just like yours. It is such a joy to play. My first high end guitar in over 20 years. So well balanced. HD-28 very nice too! Do you still have that 2017 D-28?
