I'm 47, born in Mexico City. Went skiing for the very first time 1 year ago. I only fell twice. And yes, one of those was while getting off the lift. It was awesome.

You're not a noob. You did well -
To think we never wore helmets ever and to think of the speeds we'd go ----and the potential for some nasty head trauma - how stupid were we in our younger days. It's been probably 20-30 yrs since I've been skiing (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Utah, Idaho, Washington St). Good times, lots of memories but no more for me. Older age has me injury prone in the legs.

As a former Ski School Director and Course Conductor for the Canadian Ski Instructor's Alliance, I can confidently say you are better than you think. That said, 2 things you can think about will help you.


1. Your skiing stance should be the opposite of your running stance, especially in the hips. (Hips slightly back, shoulders slightly forward.) Hopping drills can help a lot with this.


2. As you move through the turn, allow your legs (especially your downhill leg) to bend to regulate pressure. Those little balance wobbles you occasionally had were a result of the pressure building up under your ski not being regulated because your legs were stiff and straight.


Like running, the best way to improve is mileage, so get out and practice as much as you can.

Great job Sage! Hope you had fun with it!! Looked like a beautiful day. Only tip is you don't need to pull the toe levers up when you're skiing downhill. That "lockes it out" meaning it won't release as easily in a crash, that's how knees get tweaked. Pull them up to go up, leave them down to go down.
Keep up with it, I'm sure you'll love it!

Nice! Can’t wait to see you at the eldora training sessions and the nighthawk races next year! Over 100 people showed up this past Wednesday. In terms of skiing form, I would recommend having your upper body always facing down the hill and your arms up in the front to limit the rotation of your body. Then push a little more with your shins on the front of the boot when on groomers, but unfortunately, that won’t work with skinny skis in powder or snow with varying conditions. We tend to lean back a lot to keep the tips up when in the backcountry, or else the tips get caught and you end up front flipping! It will be amazing cross training, and maybe some day, your running will be your cross training ;)

I've been skiing in Colorado (started at Snowmass, now prefer Copper) since 1973 and I'm from Texas! Both my kids started skiing at or before age three.

Careful with skiing in what looks like walk mode (lifting the front lever up)! That is really risky because it means the ski basically won't release and you can easily tear something in your knee. Better to lose a ski than to get injured.

Try spending some time on ice skates. Played roller/ice hockey for several years and felt that helped my transition to skiing super easy. Also, you have more control of your skis if you gain a little more speed.

When you're trying to go uphill without skins, place your skis in the form of a V, and alternate them back and forth to move uphill while using your ski poles (and a lot of arm muscle) to move yourself uphill. It takes a bit of practice but is easier to execute for most slopes that aren't drastically uphill compared to the sideways approach you're using.

you done good! great to see my ol' Eldora 'office'! proud of you for pursuing some wholistic sport diversity! okay, first of all; SWEET SETUP! holy smokes! it took feeble ilg 3 years to pull together a skimo package! even that sweet package is not great for enjoying downhills; skimo skis are made to excel skinning up, and just surviving various snow conditions on descents. regardless, next ski sesh: right now you are just sliding your turns with a passive core/upper body. that's how people hurt their knees. you'll need to focus on learning to CARVE your turns and that requires compressing into your downhill ski telegraphed by a pole plant. As above, so below. So start with a pole plant and begin arcing your turn around that pole plant. Soon, you'll feel a rhythmic dance-like sensation of upliftment and compression. you can check my paltry YouTube channel for lots of ski footage. Maybe i'll do a vLog on SkiMo and let you know when its published! Again, super proud of you! head bowed,

Learning on AT skis is indeed more challenging, too (I think, anyway)! Best of luck! I keep my center of gravity LOW on a descent the entire time.

Lean on your shins when turning, it makes parallel turns a lot easier.
