In Part I (of 5) Stephanie describes and shows the first steps in selecting fabrics, preparing fabrics, making 2 templates , and cutting the fabrics for her Seeing Stars in My Tumbling Blocks quilt. This variation on the tumbling block hexagons requires that you cut carefully, mark starts and stops, use 1/4" seams (even mark the seam with a mechanical pencil), stitch short running stitches in a straight line, and press not iron the shapes. (Next Video dates listed below as you travel along with me to make a quilt.)

How nice is this pattern? Stephanie made a version of this quilt years ago, and recently gave it to one of her nephews. It is their family heirloom. She says it is really fun to be making again, and hand stitching is a plus! For best results, she recommends hand stitching.

This is a great take-along pattern to work on in the car, on vacation, kids' practice sessions, etc.

Notes:
1. For a quilt 77" x 84" (approx.) 4 1/2 yards of cream or tan 42" fabric would be needed.((
(For my first quilt like this long ago, I used a nice muslin.)
2. The Stars can be made from left over cotton fabric for a scrappy, happy look.
3. The edge can be finished with simple 2 1/2" binding.
4. Next Parts:
2-Sept. 13, 2020
3-Sept. 20, 2020
4- Making quilt sandwich, pinning, quilting (options),

I’m a beginning-beginner and this gives me confidence to try something more than squares and rectangles. Your explanations are clear and logical. I love the tips you throw in too. I’m going to make a smaller version for my nephew who is an architect. Thanks for sharing!
