This is a great answer. Whenever I’m asked this question the one word answer is yes, but I always want to communicate that, that shouldn’t stop anyone from enjoying the benefits of getting started in ML. Learn how to apply ML while also learning the math on the side.

Sometimes algorithms don’t use extremely difficult math such as decision trees using entropy or kNN using Euclidean distance.

This post is a good example of being realistic and explaining why, but also not discouraging. That’s great ❤

Im not really good with math but bing chat AI help me a lot to cover my math weakness in machine learning industries so i concluded that being a clever person to use anything around for best result is better than learning everything from scratch and make excuse for our own weaknesess.

every time I tell my son to do math like calculus, my son keep complains saying, dad, I did get the point why u wan me to do calculus and linear algebra while all my classmates are busying play video games @ home and struggle @ like 1/3+2/5 @ class room. by the way my son is normal grade 7 kid.

knowing maths is helpful in any area of sciences. ML is glorified feature engineering with mathematical algorithms 😁

Although Maths is blood for ML it's important that you do notoversaturate your brain with stuff like Real Analysis/Complex Numbers/Trigo.

The overall maths you need for AI is Linear Algebra/Calculus/Stat in this order - that would take you around 70-80 hours. Which is 2 Weeks of lazy study.

I have completed 10+ machine learning projects covering most of the prediction models without having to relearn Math that I learned in high school and college, where it be linear algebra, calculus or statistics. I wonder how much deeper I need to dive into the Math to be a competent model developer.

İ can say that you just need the understanding and problem solving at the beginning and later on it will teach you what you didnt know or forgot about all together

Yes but where to start? And I’ve yet to see the applications of math in the field. I understand that whats going on under the hood is linalg and calc, but aside from knowing the formulas behind the various optimization functions etc, how can math ACTUALLY help?
