A lot of people are complaining that the Xbox One controller's shoulder buttons feel stiff and hard to press. They're probably holding the controller or pressing the bumpers wrong. Watch for the explaination.

"this is the internet, you're busy, let's get right into it" Awesome! So tired of lengthy chit-chatty intros to almost every video on youtube. Clear, concise, and informative video. Thumbs up brah.

just got my first xbox, i found myself doing exactly what you were saying before-hand. I almost considered that i might have required 2 fingers on top for both sides, but that was really uncomfortable. thank you for explaining it. it all makes sense now.

I landed here because the Xbox One controller hurts my wrist after an hour. I do not have this issue with my PS4 controller or the 360 controller on my PC. I guess I need to start rolling my index fingers instead of lifting and taping the bumpers. I was not pressing the hard area as you showed in the video. I was just lifting and tapping the bumper with the portion of my index finger closer to my palm but my wrist would start to hurt after an hour of doing this. Not a fan of this design at all. No matter what I do I feel like I'm holding it wrong.

Pressing them is fine, holding them down is different. It's very uncomfortable.

If the controller requires a tutorial on how to properly use the fucking bumpers then you know the controller is the problem and not the user.

Most underestimated video on Youtube! Thank you uploader!

hm.. that's an interesting design, but I still would have preferred one that would allow me to rest my finger on the bumper - especially in games like Dark Souls II, where RB and RB are the most common buttons I push, not the triggers.

I am saddened that this requires a video tutorial.

If a controller requires a video on how to use it correctly then it's a bad design.

Having gone from the PS3 to the Xbox one, I think the Xbox one controller design is nothing short of abysmal. Never has a controller hurt my fingers so much. The left stick causes gamers thumb like no other due to its hard material and small surface area which increases pressure on the thumb. As for the index finger, I think this 'rolling' technique is good but it means practicing it many times before it becomes a natural movement.

That is actually awesome! For racing games you can actually trigger rt the way you want while pressing rb. Never thought about it that way...

A well designed controller is one where you can hold the controller and press buttons in any way you see fit.  You should not have to press the shoulder buttons in a specific manner for them to feel comfortable to press.  Bad shoulder button design on MS part.

Switching from PS4 I literally had to Google this because it was such a struggle but thank you that seems to make it much easier

You know something is fucked up on the controller's design when you have to make a tutorial video about how to do something as simple as pressing a button

That's exactly how I did it with the Xbox 360's controller. And it is still a pain. They just messed up the shoulder buttons. Period.

a really strange design decision to make the upper trigger so stiff on the inner side

it's meant to be pressed on the edge, but i still dont see why the whole thing couldnt press down

Going from to a DS4 to the xbox one controller, the DS4 feels way more natual

I borrowed this controller for a game, and was kinda struggling when i ever i had to switch between LT and LB for block or parry, i never had this sort of problem with any controller ever, i looked if this was just my fault but thank you for answering this, it really is badly designed to use the shoulder buttons, trying to use 4 fingers makes the thing slip out of my hands.

i'm using the xbox one s controller and it's the BEST controller i've used to date. i'm not sure about others but i'm comfortable just putting index fingers on the bumpers and my middle fingers on the triggers. the way it presses might have been an issue in the last model but it's really not an issue for me on this one. pressing the bumpers at any point feels smooth and natural and you COULD do it this way or just press it down with your fingers

This is not well designed. This is a classic case of fixing something that isn't broken. This is one very specific use case. What about games where I have to rapidly press the bumpers in succession? You're going to lose speed with this technique.

Have you ever played a game where you wished the bumpers worked like this? No. Neither have I. On my 360, on my PS4 and hell... even on my PS3, the bumpers worked exactly how they should. There was no need to change anything. Now they've changed it for arguably better performance in Call of Duty, at the expense of any other game that uses bumpers in a different manner.

This is just the Dual Shock 3 problem. They made the controller specificly for Gran Turismo and it made the controller suck at other games like shooters. Microsoft apparently tried to optimize this for Call of Duty, and now the controller feels shit for so many other games.
