I don't wear makeup anymore except for special occasions like weddings, but I used to wear makeup almost daily in my late teens and early 20s. I can say I do get more compliments on my looks from guys now that don't wear makeup, but I got more compliments from girls back when I wore makeup. I've tried testing guys I know to see if that is an accurate stereotype that they can't tell, But none of the guys I have tried testing have struggled to tell if a girl is wearing makeup. They get it right as often as girls do. Most guys I've talked to about it tend to air on the side of thinking a girl is wearing makeup even when she isn't. I haven't run into the opposite. Maybe it's a California guy thing? Or a big city thing? Most girls I know don't wear a ton of makeup, so I think guys here are used to that. So when a girl is wearing makeup, they notice right away. That might be a big factor. Where you grew up and how much makeup you are used to seeing definitely makes a difference.

Ok so I was in a fitness session with my trainer, and he starts to mansplain makeup. He says “Y’know makeup actually gives girls acne. That’s probably why your skin looks so good”

My skin looked good because I was essentially wearing a full face of makeup.

So I said “oh minus the makeup I’m wearing right now right?”

Then he was flabbergasted. Dumbfounded. “Wait what?” he said. “You’re wearing makeup?”

“Yeah” I laughed.

He carefully examines my face quite closely and comes to a conclusion.

“Huh. I don’t see it.” He says.

“Well it’s there.” I laugh.

I then circle back to the beginning of the conversation. Just to make sure he understands. “You know makeup is like specifically designed to be on skin for long periods of time right? Like it’s formulated to not give you acne because it’s supposed to be on skin.”

“We’ll like some makeup” he says. I can tell he feels a little emasculated. He’s quieter and a lil insecure because he’s sort of been proven wrong.

So I say “yeah some make up can give you acne for sure.”

For reference my skin is not that good. I have at least 3 pimples. Large - medium at all times but that encounter definitely gave me a slight confidence boost on my makeup skills. Cuz I was convinced everyone could tell my foundation did not match my neck. Guess some of them couldn’t lol.
