How to Extract Bismuth From Pepto-Bismol

In this educational chemistry tutorial, I go through the process of how to extract Bismuth from Pepto-Bismol. The procedure is fairly easy and can be done with household materials. Although I am unable to get Bismuth into its metallic form, the final product looks really cool. I recommend giving this experiment a try because it is a lot of fun.

9:57 You could easily separate the excess aluminum from the bismuth by using more HCl as bismuth is not dissolved by HCl and aluminum is rapidly dissolved.

+Ubaid´s Lab I think I know why your procedure went wrong: what you should do is treat the bismuth subsalicylate with an excess of hydrochloric acid (the acid must be in excess to stabilize the bismuth chloride in solution since bismuth chloride actually reacts with water if the acid concentration is too low to form a white precipitate of bismuth oxychloride: BiCl3 + H2O = BiOCl + 2 HCl), filter off the precipitate of salicylic acid from the solution which contains the bismuth chloride and then add aluminium metal to precipitate the bismuth as a black powder.
