Johnny Cash may have been a legend, but he was also a man with personal problems that threatened his life, his relationships, and the California Condor. Cash was a drug addict, whether or not he happened to be using on any given day, and he relapsed several times over the course of his long life. Not all of his resulting binges resulted in disaster, but some sadly did, and these events are not widely discussed, perhaps out of respect and admiration for Cash's stature in the world of music. While everyone knows that Johnny Cash had personal struggles, few know the details. Here's the dark side of Johnny Cash everyone likes to ignore.

At least Johnny Cash was honest about the majority of his issues in life. A lot of celebrities don't do that.

It’s not ignored, in fact it’s the reason he is famous. His wrong doings and the comeback he had is just so powerful.

You mean the guy who sang in prisons and covered a song that was essentially a suicide note had a dark side? SHOCKING.

"He's a poet, he's a picker
He's a prophet, he's a pusher
He's a pilgrim and a preacher, and a problem when he's stoned
He's a walkin' contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction
Takin' every wrong direction on his lonely way back home."
- The Pilgrim Chapter 33.

He was human like us all. Yes he had fame a money but also a very trouble life. At the end of the day he gave more than he took. Just like Elvis did.. RIP.

Addiction makes people do “evil” things, that hurt other people and other species, too! Cash’s fans know he was an addict and alcoholic. Part of our recovery, involves doing our best to make amends for that harm. Relapses are just part of the disease of substance abuse disorder.

I never cared about his personal life. I’ve heard all this stuff long before this video. If we judged singers by their personal lives we wouldn’t listen to 90 percent of them. I loved his music and still do. He was unique and we will never see another like him

I have always known about his dark side.
For me, it always reminds me that he was human. Very flawed but also very strong and willing to repent.
Not very many people can go so dark and be willing to come back.
His story is a struggle for redemption and repentance.

Johnny's personal and past life is none of my business. I just love his music, everything else to me, doesn't matter.

Johnny Cash spent the later part of his life being a good man.
Wonder what would be found in the closet's of you and yours.

In my opinion John will always be the best musician ever. Know all of his songs. The biggest pain in my life will always be that I never got to see him sing.

It really doesn't matter how many times in life we fall down. What matters is how many times we get up.

How does “everyone like to ignore” this side of him? it’s written all throughout his songs

Johnny Cash never once said he was an angel and freely admitted that he had made a whole lot of mistakes that he regretted! He spent a lifetime working through and trying his best to atone for the things he did in his past! Johnny was a decent and kind and generous man that spoke up for the less fortunate and did his best to make the world a little better.

Baloney. Cash wrote about the fire in his second autobiography. His "dark" side and his effort to overcome it make him and his music all the more compelling.

Many people do not ignore the dark side of Johnny Cash's history they are well aware of it, they simply accept it that is, they don't hold it against him, he was in remorse of the things that he had done and always sort to be a better man.
