People don’t realize different states have different rules. I’ve lived in Kansas where you have to be 21 to bartend but previously lived in Florida where you could be 18. My Kansas coworkers were shocked when I said at one of my old jobs in Florida we had a bartender who was 18.

In Australia and in many European countries, you can drink and serve at 18. Could have been a Reddit post for one of those places.

Why does everyone assume every state has the same laws. You cannot even serve alcohol here in Utah until you're 21. Can't in Nevada either. Everyone is saying maybe they meant server because you only have to be 18. Nope not every state is 18.

Could be that the Reddit posts this student was reading were from overseas..? Most other countries someone can be 18yrs & older to serve alcohol. Certainly in most European countries, Australia & many other countries, the legal drinking AND serving age is 18yrs.

Actually in most states, you can be a bartender at 18. Some even allow people as young as 16 to tend bar as long as they don't drink.

In most states you have to be 18 to work in a retail environment that sells beer or cigarettes and 21 to serve alcohol. There are some exceptions for waiters and waitresses. 21 to actually prepare and serve drinks.

In our state you can serve alcohol at 18, but you can't drink until 21. Of course, each bar has their own discretion

I bartended at 18. I paid taxes and made benefits. It's not a matter of law, it's a matter of store policy.
