Beyoncé is facing backlash over an offensive word in her song "Heated" from her new album, “Renaissance.” It's the word "Spazz," which has been used in a derogatory way to describe people with disabilities, especially cerebral palsy. Beyonce says in a statement, "The word, not used intentionally in a harmful way, will be replaced." Two months ago, the singer Lizzo faced criticism for using the same word in her new song “Grrrls," resulting in her removing the word from the song.

Never heard of this term being used as a slur towards people with disabilities.

This word has been used for many years and it was never about people with disabilities. Ever! It was more about tripping. Like this new generation does all the time.

Not a fan of hers but her "art" should remain the way it is. If youre insulted dont buy it.

we’re in a generation where people get offended by words. crazy, but i respect that she took it out for the people that were upset

It’s sad how people often misunderstand the way a word is being used. She obviously did not use it to make fun of people. People just basically assumed that. Yes, words CAN offend people, but it depends on how it’s being used. I don’t think she deserved this criticism.

Spaz is a word used to mean "go crazy" or "go wild". We've been using it since before the 90's. This word was never directed at anyone with disabilities.

Wow, it comes from the word spastic, which is a scientific term to describe any condition relating to muscle spasms or muscular weakness. Any condition, not just palsy conditions. This is another example of people making up definitions for words just to be offended and stop people from using words as a way of gaining power.

Obviously she didn't mean it that way. Everyone needs to stop panicking about nothing.

I’m from NYC where slang is prevalent, I’ve never heard the word spaz used as derogatory to anybody let alone disabled people.

This is stupid. Spaz isn't an offensive thing for her or anyone. I'm glad I have the original on my hard copy.

I can never seem to find so many of these overwhelmingly word sensitive people in any comment section or on social media. I think the media keeps pitting both “sides” against one another subliminally.

Back in the day, I would just be offended by things and be forced to let them go. We’re trying so hard to reach perfection nowadays. It’s not even possible. I remember when we were taught, “we’re only human, so give grace to each other.”
