I use this method in the sketching phase to preview my lighting schemes, but tend avoid using it in the final rendering because I feel like letting the software handle too much of the work can cripple my ability to render manually. However, it's still a great and very useful method, especially when you have to create multiple copies of the same character/scenes for concept art.

I actually do something similiar! I shade my character in a way that there is no light source hitting them, save the drawing as a transparent png and clip a multiply layer on top for shadows and an overlay layer for light. Additionally, I also add layers in the mode "color" to add sub-surface scattering on the edges of the light and bouncelight in the places furthest away from the light.

How about planning the high lights and shadows before going into painting? I find it easier but I learnt in a traditional way.

Personally, I just use "multiply" layer with alpha on and an "add" layer with alpha on-
