WHY I'LL (PROBABLY )NEVER MOVE BACK TO THE UNITED STATES | Japanese American Living in Tokyo
In this video I'll be talking about the reasons why I'll never move back to the states. As a background, I've been living in Japan since 2018 and before that, I lived in Orlando Florida for the first 22 years of my life. This video isn't to say I hate a country or think one country is the best, so I hope you understand! As always thank you for watching :)

Your editing is getting so much better Chika! And yeah... before I even clicked on the video, I knew healthcare was going to be a factor. I lived in South Korea for six years and it was so easy and affordable with their healthcare. America's for-profit healthcare system is a nightmare.

I'm American living in NYC, my wife's Japanese, and we have two boys. We're considering moving to her hometown in Kyushu! I'll also miss my family and friends but I have to put my boys and wife first! It's not that I hate America it's more that I love Japan and her hometown!

Yep. Completely feel all of these reasons. The insane healthcare system, gun violence, nothing to really do, and constantly feeling like a tourist no matter where I lived were the reasons I permanently left the U.S. in February 2013. Life is just much better in almost every way in Asia.

Gotta live your best life, even if that involves moving countries. I've seen so many people I grew up with becoming disappointed in life because they didn't go after what they wanted and just made excuses instead to stay exactly where they were. It's far better to take a risk and go for it (within reason of course. Don't need to risk poverty with every decision haha).

It has gotten increasingly harder to stay confident in the States over the years. Totally understandable to want to leave if that option is genuinely on the table for you. I hope that someday, more people will decide to move across countries if it's in their best interest and not just stay rooted because they think they have to rather than because they want to. Maybe a country doesn't fit. Try another one to see what does.

Whatever you want to do, it's always best to trust and follow your own instincts. If your instinct is to stay in Japan🇯🇵🗾, then follow what your instinct tells you. ❤️ and kindness from 🇬🇧

Spending most of my life in Southern California I feel that I was pretty fortunate to be around so many other Asians. I kind of felt like there was a sense of superiority among Asian Americans of East Asian (Chinese/Korean/Japanese) towards Southeast Asians (Vietnamese/Filipino/Thai) though. I never felt that way in Japan, but maybe its because I speak English and I say I'm from California. Though I do relate to how you feel about not being considered American as an American. I feel like me being a foreigner in Japan was a lot more celebrated and that everything I could ask for is already in Japan. Which is why I spent the past 9 years in college striving for the move to Japan.

With the exception of the Asian hate, those are the same reasons my Japanese wife wants us to move to Japan. Problem is, I’m very American. Served in the army, work in management. The culture I’ve heard of in Japan is far too passive aggressive and I wouldn’t make it.

Did you grow up speaking Japanese at home or was it something you taught yourself when you were older? I would love to hear about how you learned to speak fluent Japanese!

When I lived in Japan years ago, I had two root canals done for about $350. Here in the States, it'll cost at least $2, 000-$3000

Watching this was like watching myself make a YouTube video (if I was female) totally connected with the ‘foreigner in a foreign country v foreigner in my home country’

Especially since my family has been in the US since 1890ish, I still get asked those same questions just because I am still full blooded Japanese.

"I'd rather be treated like a foreigner in a foreign country than a foreigner in my home country." Believe me, that makes perfect sense. I have been born and raised in the US and have never felt at home. I've always wanted to go to a different country and live there. Constantly being forced fed the propaganda that the US is the "greatest country in the world" didn't help. I never believed that, even as a kid

I’m from another Asian country but I’m well traveled and been to many places in the world and used to live in the west for a few years for my work. I’d have to say that Japan is the best in the world for a living but the thing is I don’t speak Japanese so I’m a little concerned about this. Being Asian in the west is difficult, I hate the feeling of always feeling like an outsider. In Japan being Asian you can always blend in without too much notice. I know a few Asians who were born and grew up in the states eventually choose to settle in their parents’ country because it just feels so good to walk on the street, look the same ( I mean, same race) as everybody else. Stress is a lot less and it’s purely just a comfortable feeling. Well. I guess that’s human instinct. Japan is as developed as USA, if not more developed in many aspects. If you can speak Japanese fluently I don’t see why you don’t stay in Japan.

Have a Magical Day! Life is good in Winter Garden, Florida. I would not care for the downtown part of Orlando. I want to come back and explore more rural areas of Japan, especially Nagoya.

There’re too many foreigners in Japan. Full blooded Japanese living abroad should be welcomed back.🎉
